Comment:  Photosynthesis is in general related to leaves or active stem tissue (TOP:stem photosynthetic rate per stem area) but can also be related to the shoot system. The following environmental conditions during photosynthesis measurements need to be specified: irradiance, temperature, CO2 and O2 concentration of the air, altitude or air pressure. Light saturated photosynthetic rate per leaf area is a special case (Amax) characterizing the amount of carbon (CHEBI:carbon atom) assimilated via photosynthesis by leaves per unit leaf area and unit time given light saturation and typical favourable field conditions, i.e. favourable temperatures, no apparent water limitation and ambient CO2 and O2 concentrations of the air.
